This is Gaia's largest wooden Port cellar in the historic area of Vila Nova de Gaia, holding one of the greatest collections of oak barrels and wooden vats of any Port cellar. Cockburn's wine cellars are also considered as one of the most beautiful in Vila Nova de Gaia and one of the very few Port cellars that remains a real working lodge. It is full of casks and pipes where wine is being matured, regularly assessed, blended and drawn off for bottling. The lodge also holds the Cockburn's bottle cellars, where some of Cockburn's most treasured Vintage Ports are kept, waiting to reach their full potential. Ferreira

Ferreira

Ferreira's 250-year history makes it not only one of the oldest Port companies but also one of the most loved. Ferreira was founded in 1751 by a family of winemakers. The matriarch of the company is Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira (1811-1896). She was popularised by her countrymen as "Ferreirinha", and she remains the most charismatic and legendary personalities of the Douro region. She was a symbol of steadfast entrepreneurship and Douro viticulture. She was also a pillar of the community and a generous supporter of the most in need.

Inside the Ferreira Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia is probably the most extensive and finest collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century vintages, the oldest wine dating as far back as 1815. The famous 1834 vintage is one of the best of the nineteenth century, was the centre of a tragic yet fascinating episode. In 1897, the Swedish explorer Auguste Andrée, along with two companions, decided to cross the North Pole in a balloon. On 14th July 1897, the balloon fell into the Arctic. Amazingly the explorers were still alive and held a banquet on a floating piece of ice. The main dish was seal and seagull breast. The highlight of this banquet was a bottle of Vintage "D. Antónia Ferreira" Porto, 1834, a gift from the king of Sweden.

It affords spectacular views of Porto's historic city centre and the iconic two-tier bridge which connects Porto and Gaia. The entire Lodge has been recently renovated by the Symington family. All its original features restored. Visitors to the Graham's Lodge can experience the best of three centuries of craftsmanship and heritage. Graham's is still a working cellar. No visit to the Lodge will pass without hearing the sounds of the Coopers' hammers or seeing the lodgemen collecting samples for the tasting room. The granite walls, over half a metre thick, combined with the maritime climate, ensure a constant cool temperature, ideal for the slow ageing of Port. The high ceiling is still supported by the original Riga Pine beams, and the beautiful nineteenth-century exterior remains intact. The renovated Graham's 1890 Lodge was inaugurated by the President of Portugal in March 2013. It has already become a landmark for the promotion and experience of Port in Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and the rest of Europe.

Quinta do Noval

Quinta do Noval

Quinta do Noval is one of the oldest Port producers who date back to the beginning of the 18th century with a long-standing connection with Vila Nova de Gaia. In 1981 tragedy struck when a fire ripped through and destroyed Noval's lodge in Gaia. Along with its archives, about 350,000 Litres old Port stocks were destroyed.

When the EU relaxed the rules concerning Port ageing, Quinta do Naval upticks its operations to its vineyard close to Pinhão in the Douro valley, the first of all the traditional Port companies to do so.

The visitors centre and shop on the riverfront in Gaia is your opportunity to sample the Ports from this legendary producer. Created in 1995, the interior is richly decorated with images from the Douro and of Port production yet somewhat on the small size. A second wine shop is planned on the quay of Pinhão in the heart of the Douro Valley.

Quinta dos Corvos

Quinta dos Corvos

The Quinta dos Corvos lodge is the new kid on the block and has occupied this small former Taylor's lodge since 2016. It isn't a working lodge as production and ageing happen at the family-run estates in the Douro. The purpose of this lodge is to present the Corvos brand to tourists visiting Vila Nova de Gaia. The tour is over pretty quickly and could be conceived as less intense and more laid back than the larger lodges. There is a choice of basic or more elaborate tasting packages to choose from. Ramos Pinto Cellars

Ramos Pinto

The reason the Ramos Pinto lodge stands out against the others is not so much the size of its cellars and length of the tour but in the interesting museum that highlights the company's use of graphic design in the earliest part of the 20th century. Fans of Art Nouveau poster art would love it here. The company was founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880 and had a battle to compete with the established brands. But Adriano was a marketing genius and concentrated his efforts toward the Brazilian market and rapidly became responsible for half the wine exported to South America.

Following the museum, the tour continues into the cellar, where the production and ageing processes are explained in detail. Finally, the excursion ends with a tasting inside an attractive old hall with an oak-beamed ceiling. Visitors may also make an appointment to visit the archives that contain a precious collection of historical documents relating to the production and exporting of wines during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Casa Ramos Pinto has an open house all year round. You can book your visit directly at the lodge in Gaia or by email.

Real Companhia Velha

Real Companhia Velha

Over the past two and a half Centuries, Real Companhia Velha has built a reputation for excellence among the most demanding lovers of Port. As the oldest Port Wine company in Portugal, it was founded in 1756 by a Royal Charter of King José I.

The tasting room is decorated to perfection, with benches and tables made of the same wood as the ageing barrels. It has several historical graphics that illustrate 259 years of history. At the end of the tasting, you can visit the friendly shop and boutique with the full range of products from Real Companhia Velha, brands like Royal Oporto, Quinta das Carvalhas, Delaforce and others. Getting to the Real Companhia Velha can be a little tricky as it's two kilometres from the quayside of Gaia. You can take the metro to the General Torres station and take a 10-minute stroll. Rozés

Rozés

The company was founded in Bordeaux in 1855 by Ostend Rozès, a merchant of fine wines. The Rozès company began to import and market Port wine in 1930 under the brand "Porto Rozès". This label has belonged to the company Vranken Pommery Monopole since 1999.

Today, its 230 hectares of vines located in all three sub-regions of the Douro produces the Port wine that ages within their cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia. Having always focused on the principles of its founder, Rozès remains a House where quality, tradition and innovation go hand in hand. Visitors are welcome to experience the warm and charming atmosphere at the cellars by appointment only. There is a feel of a medieval castle about this lodge. Once you step through the door, you're guided downstairs into mysterious-looking rooms and long tunnels which seem to go on forever. Tours here seem more personal and intimate than the more popular lodges on the riverfront. The cellars are located way up the hill away from the river, therefore getting here on foot a little tricky. If you have a car, there's no problem as there is plenty of parking space here.

Sandeman's "Don" logo has become an icon, inspired by mixing a Spanish matador and the black cloak of Portuguese university students, to symbolise the company's role in both the Port and Sherry trades. It's reputed to be the worlds first logo. In fact, the marketing term "brand" comes from branding Port barrels with a hot iron. The company was founded by George Sandeman in 1790 and during its long history, it's survived many mergers and has expanded to global success. As well as the cellars there is an impressive collection of paintings, photographs, ceramics, antique bottles, and other memorable items that tells you a fascinating story through an interesting exhibition.

You can’t miss the Sandeman Lodge, the wide façade of the building stands right on the riverfront and can easily be seen from the Porto side. The “Dom” theme continues inside, your tour guide wears the matador's hat and cape. The tour lasts about half an hour and there's a number of tasting options available. Prices start at €6.00 for the most basic.

Vasconcellos

Vasconcellos

One of the lesser-known Port companies with a presence in Gaia, Vasconcellos will offer the visitor a more in-depth and personal tour than some of the larger brands. Renown for their aged Tawnies, Vasconcellos caters for the domestic market. You'll hear a lot about the art of blending during your visit here. On the world stage, Vasconcellos remain somewhat enigmatic. In the UK, they trade under the brand name of Butler, Nephew & Cº. Many would be surprised to learn they've been producing fine Ports since 1879. The tour and tasting cost €10, which is refunded if a purchase is made.

Vasques de Carvalho

Vasques de Carvalho

Vasques de Carvalho has had a presence in Gaia since 2018. This new addition is not a working wine cellar but a shop and exhibition space dedicated to this lesser-known Port company. It's located away from the busier part of Gaia, which has both positives and negatives for Vasques de Carvalho. This family business started making wines during the mid-19th century. The lack of sales created led to wines being aged and stored at their warehouse. When they gained Port wine producer status in the 1970's they had a large collection of old stock ideal for blending Tawnies for what the company is celebrated for. There's various tasting options here.

Wiese & Krohn

Wiese & Krohn

Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians cousins, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. Since then, the firm has built up an outstanding reputation for its old cask-aged Ports. In particular, it's ‘Colheitas’ or single harvest Tawnies, where it holds reserves of rare wines from the 19th century. Krohn is also noted for its finely-constituted Vintage Ports sourced from its flagship Douro property, Quinta do Retiro Novo, in the Rio Torto Valley.

The Fladgate Partnership, the owner of Taylor's Port, has continued the trend of consolidation in the industry by buying tawny specialist Wiese & Krohn. Their lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia is at the time of writing is CLOSED to the public.
